Gem Stunner

What do I do? Help me!?

Ok so.

I have been looking for a free lease horse for about two months now, and I found an absolute stunner. 16.3hh TB Chestnut Gelding. He was an absolute gem. I had ridden him a few times, and loved how he worked and thought I could get somewhere with him. My parents agreed to take him. Two days before I was ment to pick him up, he had a vet check done and he turned out to be lame in his front foot. I told my mum we could wait until he was better. She went her own way and called a friend of hers who has a few horses.

She tolde her friend about how he shys when he gets scared of something, which mind you, is like one step, and her friend reccomends I don't get the horse.

So now, I'm stuck at home, grieving because I spent half a grand on a saddle I no longer need, and the fact that I just lost a horse I knew I could get somewhere with.

What do I do?

Firstly, give your mom a break, please! Watching you on a giant horse might make her very nervous and she is probably just looking out for your safety.

I don't know what your skill level is, but if you're not an experienced rider, then I'm really sorry, but a spooky horse is not for you. There are plenty of horses out there. Pick one that is safe! Pick one that will not spook at all and you can enjoy yourself. Learning on a spooky horse that needs additional training itself is not a good option. Start with a horse that has "been there, done that". That is the best way to learn.

The lameness could be a really serious issue. Did the vet identify the cause of lameness? If the lameness is caused by navicular or founder, those are irreversable hoof problems and you are very likely to have frequent lameness problems down the road if corrective (expensive) shoeing is not done correctly. If the lameness is caused by an abcess or white line disease, these are conditions that are going to take constant treatment.

Do yourself (and your mom!) a favor and find a very well broke, quiet horse with no lameness problems.
