What is the Patriot Act?

Former Minn. Gov. Jessie Ventura made a speech today and referred to the Patriot Act or Bill which restricted American Citizens the right to bare arms.

The P.A.T.R.I.O.T. (Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism) Act was introduced in October of 2001 in response to the September 11 attack. In a nutshell, it basically allows government agencies to investigate suspected terrorists without having to first get court orders for wiretapping, search & seizures, financial document analyzation, etc. Many Americans feel that this violates their privacy rights. The Act also allows for the government to indefinately detain IMMIGRANTS that they feel are involved in terroristic activities. This detention does not apply to american born citizens. There is no restriction on the right to bare arms. Ventura may have been making an analogy of sorts.
There are many others components to the Act. The original Act was to expire in Dec. of 2005 but just before that, both houses ammended & eventually passed a revised version. Bush signed it into law in 2006.
What it boils down to is that in order to keep the country safe, some of our liberties & privacy end up being compromised. As with any law, you will have people that agree with the changes & then you will have some who feel "violated" and therefore oppose them.
